You/Me

This project developed from my fascination with the cultural processes by which class, race, sexuality and gender stereotypes affect how we see ourselves and interact with others. I photographed and interviewed 130 people in Nimbin, Goulburn and Canberra.

By systemising the visual portraits, I removed the individuals from their own settings while retaining cultural markers like clothes, hairstyles and body posture. The photographs describe each individual physically, with the video interviews giving each participant the opportunity to describe themselves emotionally. In the interviews, I asked the participants “How do you see yourself, or think of yourself?”
