Venice

Friends were visiting Venice and I jumped at the chance to join them and revisit one of my favourite cities. The juxtaposition between such old traditions with modern culture in Venice fascinates me, and the colours always astonish. What struck me this time were the way old modes of transport are still the most efficient way of getting things around the islands. There isn’t the local tradesman’s ute; instead they use the flat bottomed, long boats purpose-built for the shallow lagoon. The garbage collectors don’t use a massive truck, but a boat with a hoist to pull the trolleys on and off the small islands. Young people with trolleys and hand trucks wind through the narrow lanes with deliveries all day, weaving around the fast walking natives and the dawdling tourists. These photos are a record of the adventure.
