Warriors

Investigating the representation of women in sport, I photographed a local women’s soccer team in Canberra using extremely low angles, designed to reflect the glorification of the women’s athleticism and skill, referencing some of Leni Riefenstahl’s photography from the 1936 Olympics. To reduce the objectification of the women’s bodies, so commonly a part of photography of women in sport, I photographed the work out of focus, to emphasize the physical and emotional bonding of players, and mate-ship, which is usually reserved for men. I used transparency film, blue and magenta filters, and cross-processed the film to achieve the impressionistic effect and colour aesthetic.
